Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Indonesia, Cambodia, and Papua New Guinea

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Indonesia, Cambodia, and Papua New Guinea from April 18 to 23, as announced by foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.

During this tour, Minister Wang will preside over the Fourth Meeting of the China-Indonesia High-Level Dialogue Cooperation Mechanism and the Seventh Meeting of the China-Cambodia Intergovernmental Coordination Committee, highlighting China’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and cooperation with these key Southeast Asian nations.

Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, will engage in discussions aimed at advancing bilateral relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and promoting regional stability in these countries. This diplomatic initiative underscores China’s ongoing efforts to deepen engagement and foster mutually beneficial partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region.

Minister Wang’s itinerary includes a visit to Papua New Guinea, where China has been expanding its influence, especially as a counterbalance to US and Australian presence in the region.

The Pacific Islands, though small in population, possess significant natural resources and occupy a crucial geostrategic position, which could be strategically vital in any conflict over Taiwan.

This visit follows Indonesia’s president-elect Prabowo Subianto’s recent trip to China, where President Xi Jinping emphasized the strong bilateral ties and discussed regional peace initiatives.

China continues to be a major source of foreign direct investment in Indonesia, with significant investments in various projects across the archipelago nation.
